Tom Ridge Keynotes Aviation Week Security Conference

November 13, 2008

U.S. security expert Tom Ridge, president and CEO of Ridge Global, presented the opening keynote address at this year’s Aviation Week Aerospace and Defense (A&D) Programs Conference, held in San Diego, California.

Ridge, America’s first secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and former governor of Pennsylvania, spoke on the impact of global events on the aerospace, defense and security sectors.

Fixing a broken system is everyone’s responsibility, stressed Ridge, but particularly the industry itself. “It’s in your best interest to take ownership of the system and step in to make changes versus facing regulations from the government,” he said.

In the midst of the global economic crisis, Secretary Ridge underscored the need to halt cost overruns, generate efficiencies and do more with less. He quoted a sign in the office of his former Pennsylvania budget director, “Nothing spurs the imagination like a budget cut.”

“The technologies generated by A&D are critical to the security of free societies,” Ridge said. “You serve an important role, and that role needs to be continued, but in a way that produces outcomes that are beneficial and affordable to both the public and private sectors.”
