AUDIO: Secretary Ridge on the Sixth-Year Anniversary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security

March 16, 2009

The nation’s first secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security spoke today with Federal News Radio about the challenges and future of America’s 15th Cabinet department, six years after its creation. “It continues to be a work in progress,” said Ridge, the former governor of Pennsylvania and now president and CEO of Ridge Global. Citing the good work of Secretaries Chertoff and Napolitano in continuing to build on the department’s sturdy foundation, Secretary Ridge added, “There still remains quite a bit of work to be done.”

In talking about recent violence along the southern border and immigration issues, Secretary Ridge underscored Secretary Napolitano’s experience in addressing these issues.

“Secretary Napolitano understands the challenges associated with illegal immigration and that’s certainly one of the reasons I applauded her appointment. She’s had to deal with it on a day-to-day basis as governor of Arizona, and I’m quite sure that perspective will make her an even more effective secretary.”
